A Vibrant Display of Heritage in the Heart of Erbil

The ancient citadel of Erbil, a silent witness to millennia of history, came alive this spring with the vibrant sounds and colours of the annual Kurdistan Cultural Festival. The week-long event, which concluded last month, was a resounding success, attracting thousands of international visitors and cementing the region's reputation as a safe, welcoming, and culturally rich destination.

The festival showcased the unique heritage of the Kurdish people through a diverse program of events. Open-air stages hosted nightly performances of traditional music and the famous `Govend` circle dance, while galleries in the city's historic bazaar featured exhibitions by contemporary Kurdish artists.

Highlights of the Festival

This year's event was the largest to date, with a clear focus on international participation. Key highlights included:

  • International Music Collaborations: Renowned Kurdish musicians shared the stage with artists from France, Italy, and India, creating unique fusion performances.
  • Gastronomy Corner: A dedicated food market offered visitors the chance to sample authentic Kurdish cuisine, from savoury `Kutilk` dumplings to sweet `Gez` nougat.
  • Artisan Market: Craftsmen from across the region displayed their skills in carpet weaving, traditional metalwork, and the making of `Klash`, the traditional white footwear.
  • Film Screenings: An independent film festival ran in parallel, showcasing powerful works by emerging Kurdish directors.

A Warm Welcome for International Guests

Organisers noted a significant increase in attendees from Europe and North America, many of whom used the Iraq eVisa system to facilitate their travel.

"We felt incredibly welcome here," said Maria, a tourist from Spain attending the festival. "The energy is infectious, and the people are so proud to share their culture. The eVisa made the logistics very simple, allowing us to focus on enjoying this amazing experience. We are already planning to come back next year."

The Governor of Erbil praised the event's success, stating, "This festival is a message to the world. It is a message of peace, art, and resilience. We are proud to show the world the true face of Kurdistan and Iraq – one that is vibrant, historic, and open to all."

The success of the Kurdistan Cultural Festival is a powerful indicator of the growing appeal of specialised, experience-based travel. It highlights how cultural events can serve as a major driver for tourism, offering visitors a deeper and more meaningful connection to the places they visit.
