The most recent Arba'een pilgrimage, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, saw an estimated 20 million participants, with over four million travelling from outside Iraq. This represents a significant increase in international visitors, with large delegations arriving from Iran, Pakistan, India, Lebanon, and even Western countries.
Investment in Infrastructure and Hospitality
To accommodate this influx, both the government and private sector have heavily invested in hospitality infrastructure. Najaf International Airport has undergone significant expansion to handle more flights, and a new high-speed rail link connecting Baghdad to Karbala is in its final stages of planning.
"We are not just building hotels; we are building a welcoming experience," says Ahmed Al-Asadi, the head of a Najaf-based hospitality group. "Our goal is to provide pilgrims with comfort and peace of mind, allowing them to focus entirely on their spiritual obligations. This means modern accommodation, reliable transport, and multilingual support services."
The eVisa: A Gateway for Pilgrims
The introduction of the eVisa system has been a game-changer for many independent pilgrims and small groups. Previously, visa applications could be a lengthy process handled through embassies. Now, eligible nationalities can complete their application online in minutes.
"The eVisa made my family's dream trip possible," explains Raza Hassan, a software engineer from London who recently visited Karbala. "The process was so straightforward. We received our visas via email within a week, which gave us the confidence to book our flights and hotels. It has opened the door for many like us who wish to make this profound journey."
More Than a Journey: The Pilgrim Experience
For millions, a trip to the shrines of Imam Ali in Najaf and Imam Hussein in Karbala is the spiritual pinnacle of their lives. The atmosphere during major commemorations is one of intense devotion, unity, and generosity, with locals famously offering food, water, and shelter to pilgrims free of charge along the walking routes.
This spiritual boom is not only reconnecting the global diaspora with its heritage but also fostering a powerful image of Iraq's resilience, hospitality, and profound historical importance. As the infrastructure continues to improve, the number of pilgrims is only expected to grow, cementing Iraq's place as a premier destination for religious tourism worldwide.
